The idea of doing a new norms park came to us during the MCO (Movement Control Order) implemented by the Malaysian government as a response to the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Like most Malaysians throughout the MCO, each of us played our individual roles to help flatten the curve. We worked from home, learnt new skills (like ordering food and groceries online), and exercised within the comforts/confines of our homes.

Just like most Malaysians, we wanted to go out; to stretch our legs and have a change in scenery. It gets boring, don't you agree?

Following the news portals avidly, we learnt just as much as anyone else regarding how to combat this pandemic in our own capacity. We watched as our selfless front liners formed a protective shield between us, the rakyat, and the virus.  We also noted the importance of wearing a mask and maintaining proper social distancing.

We started thinking and discussing on what our roles are, as architects who design for the built environment. What can we do to raise awareness on the the importance of maintaining proper social distancing and mask wearing; whilst paying tribute to our selfless front liners?

To push such a vital message, we needed a site in a strategic location and accessible by everyone. It had to be a place where everyone could see it and engage with it.

We knew just the place, but...
it belongs to the local council, Kuching South City Council (MBKS).
